Untracked Terrain

Austria, Dorfberg; November 2017

A project in November is already tradition; in 2017 we left for our sixth November Trip. After visiting Prague, climbing in the Harz, surfing in Sylt, canoeing in Brandenburg and ascending the Zuckerhütl in the Alps, it was time for cross-country skiing. A very intense manner to sense the landscape and yourself, that neither us nor our companions Alessandro, Marian or Joel knew before.
Our trip started with an 8 hour overnight drive from Berlin to the south of Austria, where the amount of snow exceeded our expectations. After our first ski attempts in the flat areas, we felt ready and committed by ascending 700 meters, pulling a 30 Kg pulka with food and equipment for two days and one night. Arriving at the crest on 2000 meters, we finally enjoyed the sensation of sliding over the snow, aiming for a smooth and uniform rhythm while lengthen the slide of the supporting leg during time.
Exhausted from the day, we mounted our camp in the snow and prepared for the night. We enjoyed the community by the bonfire until our last wood combusted and the cold of the night displaced us to our sleeping bags. While our friends slept in the tent, we found shelter in a raised hide on a tree which we insulated with branches of the fir tree.
The thought of the return journey was far, as another day of skiing in a snow-covered forest in the Alps was about to begin.
